User Support Analyst

Required Skills

  • Investigates and resolves computer software and hardware problems of users
  • Receives telephone calls from users having problems using computer software and hardware or inquiring how to use specific software
  • Talks to user to learn procedures followed and source of error. Answers questions, applying knowledge of computer software, hardware, and procedures. Asks user with problem to use telephone and participate in diagnostic procedures, using diagnostic software, or by listening to and following instructions. Determines whether problem is caused by hardware, (e.g. modem, printer, cables, or telephone)
  • Talks with colleagues to research problem and find solution. Talks to programmers to explain software errors or to recommend changes to programs
  • Reads trade magazines to obtain current information about computer software
  • Tests software and hardware to evaluate ease of use and whether product will aid user in performing work
  • Possesses strong troubleshooting skills with various kinds of software
  • Has experience with installing, tuning and setting up OS and application software, including database servers and RDBMS-based software

Desired Skills

  • Writes software and hardware evaluation and recommendation for management review
  • Writes or revises user training manuals and procedures
  • Develops training materials (e.g. exercises and visual displays)
  • Trains users on software and hardware on-site or in classroom, or recommends outside contractors to provide training
  • Experience using RDBMS, writing SQL queries and reports using reporting applications
