Terry Swift, PhD

Co-Founder, Chief Computer Scientist

Dr. Swift's primary expertise is in Artificial Intelligence, Logic Programming, and Databases, with numerous publications in these areas.

Dr. Swift is one of the original developers of the XSB system, which adds efficient tabling and non-monotonic reasoning techniques to Prolog. Before his academic career, Dr. Swift worked to build enterprise artificial intelligence systems for the US Department of Justice and the Treasury Department, using logic programming and data mining techniques with Oracle databases, where he continues to work today on a part-time basis, providing his logic programming expertise to extend and refine the Prolog-based tools that are used to detect patterns with shipping containers that may correlate with national security risks.

Since 2005, Dr. Swift has contributed to efforts at MDLogix to develop the XSB Constraint Handling Rules (CHR) engine that is a key component of the MDLogix Health Science Process Framework (HSPF). HSPF is the health science-based web technology platform underlying CRMS.

Dr. Swift and Dr. Tien work closely together to drive innovation in the application of computer science, computational logic, and declarative programming to create solutions for complex problems of Knowledge Representation and Reasoning (KRR) and adaptive workflow in the health domain. For example, DARPA recently awarded a Phase I SBIR contract to develop the use of Answer Set Programming to handle certain types of problems in large network graphs.
